Term 4

Its dry and windy so we need to water every day - especially the new plants we have just planted.

Keep up the good work.

Our new orchard needs plenty of water.

We are protecting our trees so they grow strong and healthy.

Mr Myers has been surrounding our trees with protective netting.

Our potato patch is growing - we need to mound up the potatoes soon and also keep watering.

A few small pumpkin plants need mulch and water.

More baby pumpkins.

Mr Myers has transformed an old toilet block into our garden shed - everything is so organised it makes it easy for us to work in.

Watering team.

Its getting drier at Marewa School and our big gardens have potatoes and pumpkin plants in them - we are  watering each afternoon with a team of watering can experts.

We are hoping it will rain a lot over the holidays.

recycling and worm tea

Here are our great yoghurt pot cleaners, Sade and Sam  - look at how many bags of yoghurt pots we have saved from going in the landfill -  Mr Myers will be taking this terms collection to the recycling station soon.  We use some of them for our seedlings aswell.

Sam and Sade have also been busy this term diluting our worm tea - their job has been made easier as Mr Myers has converted an unused toilet block into our garden shed.

At Discovery time some of the juniors learnt about our worm farm - They helped feed the worms - worms don't like citrus or kiwifruit or bread or meat but they do like most other fruit and tea and coffee grounds!!!!!

Spring has sprung at Marewa School - look at all our lovely tuis in our spring trees!!!!!!!!

Our little tomato plants are looking a bit sad.  We hope the plastic containers around them will protect them from all the wind we have had lately.

Rawiri and Jakayze check on our new plants and our rather wobbly scarecrow.  We'll have to think about how to straighten him up!  We decided to keep the lavendar bush in our garden because it's attracting all the bees.  We need the bees to help our fruit grow.  Mr Meyer put the orange fence around our garden because the plants Mr Jackson planted for our hedge hideaway (just in front of Room One and Two's garden) have been squashed by people running through.  The fence will protect them until they are bigger.

Rawiri found blue at the bottom of the blueberry flowers.  They will turn into blueberries!

.....and our favourite plant - strawberries!!!!
The sticks with upside down coke bottles are going to be moveable gardens.  We were trying them out to see how well they stand up in the garden.  We are going to plant marigolds in them.

Making our scarecrow

Zion bangs in the pipe to hold the scarecrow.

Sedric saws the scarecrow frame while Jakayze holds it steady.

Making Room One's scarecrow

We used old shredded paper from the office to stuff our scarecrow.  We used an old painting shirt and an old sunhat.  Mrs Kohlis-Lee got some sticks from the beach for the frame.

It was fun making our scarecrow!

Orchard Planting

Mr Jackson showed us how to plant the fruit trees. First dig a hole deep enough, then add water, take tree out of bag and release the roots, next add a bit of fertilizer.  Put the tree in the hole and fill in with dirt - get someone to hold the tree straight while the hole gets filled up.

Then it was our turn  - we worked well as a team - it was hard work.

We have planted apple, pear, mandarin, orange, guava and plum trees.
